Comprehensive health insurance for foreigners: what you need to know
· 5 min read
Foreigners from outside the EU who stay in the Czech Republic for more than 90 days and are not participants in public health insurance must have health insurance in the scope of comprehensive health care (komplexní zdravotní péče). Without it, the Ministry of the Interior will not issue or extend your stay.
Who needs it
- Holders of long-term visas and long-term residence permits who are not in the public health insurance system.
- Typically entrepreneurs on a trade licence (živnost) without permanent residence, students and family members.
- Employees of a Czech employer are usually publicly insured through the employer, but their family may not be.
What to look at when choosing
- The scope of coverage and payout limits.
- Exclusions: for example waiting periods for pregnancy, dental care or chronic diseases.
- The network of contracted doctors and hospitals in your city.
- The length of the insurance: it must cover the whole stay you are applying for.
- Assistance service and the option to communicate in your language.
